First things first. This game was only played after a fantastic effort by the goundstaff. It's a great pity that Potters Bar Town didn't show the same energy and commitment. Yes the pitch was difficult to play on but it was the same for both sides. Slough Town were just more determined and played the conditions better.
The first ten minutes were fairly even and the Scholars looked threatening and secured an early corner which came to nothing. Once again however the Scholars were undone by poor defending. The first Slough goal came after fifteen minutes. A long ball swung out to the left saw Jack Friend in pursuit and seemingly comfortable but the ball stuck in the mud and the Slough Town winger nipped in went round Friend and hit a stinging cross which George Kamurasi pushed out only to see it volleyed straight back into the net. Worse was to come! With everyone pushed up after we'd been awarded a free kick on the edge of the Slough Town box it was taken short but given away. From the interception a raking pass forward had the Scholars defence in tatters with only Jack Friend anywhere near the four advancing Slough forwards who queued up to score. Slough's third came after 60 minutes. A high ball looped over the leaping Jack Friend and a grateful Slough Town forward nipped in to score.
The Scholars were partly renergised when Lane, Laxton and Ewington came on. Ewington went close with a shot which had the Slough keeper at full stretch and a deflected shot which looped over the crossbar. Although encouraging the effort was too little and too late and Slough took a very well deserved three points.
